Local couple grateful after MRI finds cause of 3-year-old son’s health scare

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – As Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is observed in September, a local family is reflecting on a frightening diagnosis that changed their lives — and the treatment that helped their young son recover.

When Xander Shanahan was 3, his parents noticed he was not meeting his usual milestones and began seeking answers. His mother, Nicole Shanahan, said they took him to the pediatrician several times as his symptoms worsened.

“We had him to the pediatrician several times. He was vomiting and sleeping a lot. And his left eye had begun turning in to the left,” Nicole Shanahan said.

Xander’s ophthalmologist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital ordered an MRI. Doctors discovered Xander had a brain tumor and needed immediate surgery. Nicole Shanahan said the tumor was causing major problems…
