Emory University alumna Florida Hoxha (13Ox,15C) died during an explosion and collapse of a building in Athens, Greece, on Sept. 25. Hoxha, her husband Ian Alexander Kirkpatrick, her brother Florin Hoxha and his wife Erisa Cani were among six victims of the collapse.
According to CBS News, local authorities determined a gas leak caused the explosion. The residential building is on Lysikratous Street in Athens’ Plaka district, a five- to 10-minute walk from the Acropolis, one of Greece’s most visited attractions. Hoxha and her family rented the apartment and were preparing to return to the United States when the blast occurred. The other two victims included an elderly British man and his Greek wife who lived on the building’s second floor.
While attending Emory, Hoxha received the Suber Scholarship from Oxford College. Oxford established the scholarship after receiving a $3.35 million gift from the estate of World War II Army Veteran and Fulton County Superior Court Clerk Charles Edwin Suber (42Ox).
