SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – More than $11 million in federal grant funding is heading to Savannah for Project DeRenne, a major transportation overhaul nearly two decades in the making.
For drivers entering Savannah from Interstate 516, the interstate may end, but the traffic often does not. The $11.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will fund right-of-way acquisition—purchasing the property needed before road construction can begin.
First proposed in 2008, Project DeRenne is a five-phase initiative aimed at transforming how traffic flows between I-516, DeRenne Avenue and White Bluff Road. The centerpiece includes a new four-lane connector extending from a reconstructed I-516 interchange to a realigned White Bluff Road.
