Hydrant burst floods streets of downtown La Mesa ahead of Oktoberfest

LA MESA, Calif. (KUSI/ FOX 5) — A fire hydrant in downtown La Mesa spewed water and flooded nearby streets Thursday night as businesses geared up for the annual Oktoberfest.

The incident began around 9:30 p.m., when a fire hydrant near Fourth Street was possibly sheared or otherwise disturbed as businesses set up for the annual festivities. Water gushed from the hydrant and quickly spread through the streets of downtown La Mesa.

La Mesa Fire Rescue arrived on the scene and was able to clear the incident, according to the La Mesa Police Department. According to the agency the annual La Mesa Oktoberfest will not be impacted by the incident.

Water could be seen flooding the nearby streets as bystanders watched the scene unfold. It is unclear what caused the fire hydrant to burst.

The La Mesa Oktoberfest runs from Friday through Sunday this weekend as the annual event kicks off its 53rd year…
