Michael Flatley, the legendary Irish-American dancer and choreographer known for Lord of the Dance, has announced the passing of his wife of 20 years, Niamh O’Brien. She died at the age of 52 following an illness, with the family requesting privacy during this difficult time.
Flatley, 68, shared the sad news on October 5, describing Niamh as his “beautiful wife” and “best friend.” The couple met when she was a dancer in the 1993 Riverdance production, eventually marrying in 2006.
Together, they had one son, Michael St. James Flatley, born in 2007.
In a heartfelt Instagram tribute, Flatley wrote, “My heart is broken. I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend.
My gorgeous bride of twenty years has gone to the Lord in Heaven. She was the most loving mother, wife and person, and our lives will never be the same without her.”
He thanked fans for their support and asked them to keep his family in their thoughts and prayers.
Niamh had a significant role in the world of Irish dance, including performing as Saoirse in Lord of the Dance, a production created and choreographed by Michael Flatley. The couple also shared the stage in shows such as Riverdance, Feet of Flames, and Celtic Tiger.
Earlier this year, Michael publicly praised Niamh for her unwavering support during his own health battle with cancer, referring to her as “an angel.” The family expressed deep gratitude to the medical staff at Dublin’s Beacon Hospital, where Niamh spent her final days.
A spokesperson for the Flatley and O’Brien families said they are devastated by the loss and asked for privacy as they grieve. The statement also thanked everyone who has offered kindness and support.
Just months before her passing, the couple celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows-a testament to their enduring bond. Michael once shared, “I’m very blessed, I’m in love with my wife, who’s in love with me.
We have a wonderful son. I don’t remember us ever having a bad word.”
Niamh O’Brien’s death marks a sad moment for the world of Irish dance and for those who admired the couple’s remarkable partnership both on and off stage.
