Kroger eyes Portage strip mall for grocery store

PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — Kroger could transform a vacant strip mall in Portage into a grocery store.

The store would be located along S. Westnedge Avenue south of Milham Avenue.

Pete Dame, chief development officer for the city of Portage, told News 8 that the strip mall is currently vacant. After Big Lots and Joann closed their doors, Kroger approached the city and asked “whether it would be feasible to put a grocery store of theirs into the entire strip mall,” Dame said.

“(The property) is zoned for that, so it is intended for large, big-box retail,” Dame told News 8 Monday in a phone interview. “They approached us about the concept and doing their due diligence prior to starting the purchase of the properties.”…
