Higher I-26 Speed Limits Await Construction Completion

Interstate 26 drivers in Buncombe County must continue observing the 55 mph work-zone limit even where widening has added travel lanes. Higher limits have been approved for two sections, but they will take effect only after the construction requirement is met or the work-zone restriction is lifted.

The approved limits are 60 mph between Interstate 40 and Brevard Road and 65 mph between Brevard Road and Airport Road, in both directions. NCDOT spokesperson David Uchiyama explained the changes to John Boyle for Asheville Watchdog’s October 1st reporting on the corridor.

Uchiyama said the existing 55 mph limit remains until the project is complete, particularly the new interchange, or until the work-zone limit is rescinded.
