BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The FBI said artificial intelligence is driving a new wave of online crime, and for the first time, the bureau is tracking AI-related scams in its national internet crime report.
National and state numbers
The FBI’s 2025 Internet Crime Report recorded more than a million total complaints, costing Americans billions of dollars. For the first time in more than two decades of its history, the FBI’s IC3 is now tracking artificial intelligence-related complaints.
More than 22,000 AI-related complaints were filed nationwide, with nearly $900 million in victim losses. In Alabama, there were 57 AI complaints, costing more than $6 million according to the IC3 report.
