Virtually extinct tree making a comeback in NYC

THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — A type of tree essentially extinct in the wild is making a comeback in New York City.

Twenty American hybrid chestnut trees were planted in the Bronx Zoo Monday morning. The trees were donated by the New York Restoration Project and planted in partnership with the American Chestnut Foundation.

It is the first time since the early 1900s that the American chestnut tree was planted at the zoo, since a fungus wiped out four billion of these trees in the early 1900s.
