Lansing boxing gym owner works to recover after spinal stroke

LANSING, Mich. (News 10) – Ted Zale, who uses boxing to help people with Parkinson’s disease improve their mobility, is using the same training as he works to walk again after a spinal stroke.

Recovery in therapy

Zale, the owner of Rock Steady Boxing in Lansing, suffered a spinal stroke in early September. He said he woke one night with severe stomach pain and high blood pressure. When the pain returned, he could no longer feel his legs.

“My legs would not move,” Zale said. “So I slid down onto the floor and dragged myself to the bathroom. I just got as far as the dining room table and decided just to sleep under there.”

His doctor, Rebecca Wyatt of Mary Free Bed at UM Health-Sparrow, has him in therapy three times a day. Wyatt said movement can return after this type of injury, but a full recovery is not guaranteed…
