When you cross the Ohio River, you won’t travel very far before noticing all that wonderful German influence southern Indiana is known for. Whether it’s in the architecture, the little shops here and there, or the food, it’s everywhere. And the Hoosier State embraces it. There’s German in my ancestry, so maybe my love of the culture is baked in.
At Christmastime, however, it’s at a whole other level. So many of our holiday traditions have roots in Germany. The Christmas tree, for example. It’s only natural, then, for southern Indiana communities to go all out. And Ferdinand, Indiana, does just that with its annual Christkindlmarkt. A beloved destination since its debut in 1998, the Christkindlmarkt celebrates German heritage alongside the sights, sounds and traditions of the holiday season, attracting more than 10,000 visitors, according to organizers.
A Taste of German Christmas Tradition
The Ferdinand Christkindlmarkt takes its cues from the old German tradition of outdoor markets. And just like in the old country, you’ll find vendors selling delicious baked goods and treats, along with more New World offerings like burgers, Mexican food and chicken sandwiches. Well, check out the event website’s food and drink page for yourself. You will not be hungry.
Get a Head Start on Christmas Shopping
And since the Christkindlmarkt takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving, you can enjoy it as a bit of a prelude to the Christmas shopping season. Local artisans and craftspeople will be on hand selling unique items that could be just the thing for someone on your holiday shopping list.
Make Time for the Monastery and Live Entertainment
When you go, give yourself plenty of time. With more than 225 vendor booths expected, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy traditional entertainment like glockenspiel performances and a marionette theater…
