TULSA, Okla. — A local vet warns pet owners against flowers that are dangerous and potentially deadly for your cats and dogs this Valentine’s Day.
“So, the biggest plants and flowers we’re going to worry about, especially around this time of year, are lilies and tulips that are a part of the lily family,” Woodland West Animal Hospital Vet Hannah Bayless said. “So, lilies are very very toxic to cats and can cause issues and even death within 48 to 72 hours.”
These specific flowers can cause negative reactions when exposed to them.
Warning signs to look out for if your pet is exposed to these plants are decreased activity level, drooling, vomiting and loss of appetite.
“The biggest thing to watch out for with cats is going to be decreased urination, or not urination at all,” Bayless said. “This is typically seen once the kidney damages take into effect, so the sooner we can get them to a veterinarian if they have exposure to lilies, the better.”
While there are poisonous plants to look out for, there are certainly pet friendly plants and flowers as well. Roses, orchids, sunflowers, and snapdragons are examples of plants safe for your pets.
