Family reflects on their son, a Utah marine, who died in a car crash

SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — A family is grieving after their 27-year-old son, Spencer Murdoch, died in a car crash on Monday.

Spencer, a U.S. marine, died after his truck rolled on Feb. 12. Spencer’s father, David, took the call the night he was killed.

“That started the chain of events for all of us to basically have our world turned upside down,” David said.

But in remembering Spencer, his family recounts that he was a proud marine.

“He just loved his country,” David said. “He truly loved being a U.S. marine. He was serving in the reserves here in Utah, protecting his country and those he loved.”

Spencer’s family said he didn’t just try to protect his country. He was always very protective of his siblings, too.

His family also said small miracles became apparent after his death. David said their family is spread out, and getting ahold of everyone can be difficult. But on that day, everyone answered.

“You just go down the list and realize not everyone is going to be available. Everyone was able to pick up. Even John in Brazil,” David said.
