Softball tournament honors fallen Greensboro police Sgt. Dale Nix

SOPHIA, N.C. (WGHP) First responders and supportive members of the community are knocking it out of the park for a good cause this weekend.

Greensboro police sergeant Dale Nix was killed on Dec. 30 at the Sheetz in Colfax trying to interrupt a crime .

On Saturday and Sunday, there was a softball tournament to raise money for his family and show support for local law enforcement at new market fields and level cross fields.

Two dozen teams of 12 signed up to play – and the hope is for it to become an annual event.

“He was a friend, number one, my team leader in the honor guard, and a coworker,” said Sam Alvarez, an organizer.

Several of Greensboro’s finest have experience on deck—they have a softball team called the Sheepdogs.
