Deputies: Driver dead, passenger injured in rollover crash

PORTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A speeding driver’s vehicle flipped over and hit a tree near the Michigan-Indiana state line, killing him, according to deputies.

Around 11:30 p.m. Friday, a 24-year-old Indiana man was headed west on Teasdale Lake Street west of Robbins Lake Road in Porter Township “at a high rate of speed,” according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. The driver lost control of the vehicle and it flipped, sliding down an embankment and hitting a tree.

The driver, identified as James Neal Shaw, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, deputies said.

The 23-year-old passenger, also from Indiana, was taken to the hospital with injuries. The passenger was wearing a seat belt, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies believe alcohol and drugs contributed to the crash.
