Department gears up for fire prevention week

ENGLEWOOD — October is a busy month for the Englewood Fire Department. The month is all about community outreach and fire safety for the community.

The National Fire Protection Association decided this year’s National Fire Prevention Week would focus on smoke detectors.

The public health observance is the longest running in the country, originating in 1925.

Every year, the EFD kicks of National Fire Prevention Week with an open house at its Englewood Fire Training Center, 13400 Haligan Way. The community is welcome from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 5.

Guests will include Safe Kids Florida Suncoast, which will be providing helmets for kids and signups for car seat installations; FFSA Side by Side Demo; Peace River K-9; Florida Forest Service and American Red Cross.

“So our academy students, that’s part of the curriculum, come out and they assist the the community, so they’ll help with all of the stations we’ll have out there,” Krista Powell, EFD executive assistant, said.

Kids and adults will have an opportunity to meet EFD firefighters, tour the fire engines, take a ride in the ladder truck, walk the smoke room, spray a fire hose, learn hands-only CPR and watch fire safety demos. Food and beverages will be provided.
