This NC family is running through Sioux Falls to help kids in need of smiles

Up for a casual fun run? A North Carolina family is coming through town today to run a charity 5K through the Sioux Falls community, and and they’re hoping area runners will join them.

It’s one stop they are making along a journey to run 50 5Ks, in 50 days, across all 50 states.

The Hough family is hitting the pavement to help thousands of children worldwide.

Jeremy Hough, his wife, Kelly Hough, and teenage daughters Campbell and Caroline are running for Smile Train , an international cleft-focused nonprofit that provides training and resources for hospital staff worldwide to offer cleft-affected children high-quality, necessary care.

“We’re looking to generate awareness, maybe raise some money and interact with people as we travel around the country,” Jeremy Hough said. “We want people to cheer us on or come alongside us and share their stories.”

A cleft palate or a cleft lip is a common birth condition in which the roof of the mouth and / or the lip has an opening or a split that can make it difficult for infants and children to eat, breath, speak or hear. It’s the most common facial difference in children worldwide and is also associated with ostracization from society, bullying in school and even children being rejected by their parents or family members.
