City Utilities breaking ground on natural gas line renewal

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — City Utilities of Springfield is breaking ground on a major natural gas pipeline renewal project.

This $10 million project aims to replace older natural gas line in Zone 1, which is in north Springfield. The project includes replacing the existing pipes that have been around since the 1930s and adding equipment to detect and cut down on leaks.

City Utilities says Springfield residents in this area will ultimately see more steady gas rates and less methane gas released into the atmosphere due to this project.

“This will definitely help them from an affordability standpoint, but also from a reliability standpoint by replacing aging natural gas pipes is going to increase the reliability of our neighborhoods,” said Gary Gibson, City Utilities of Springfield’s CEO. “So there will be some brief construction that we understand and some mess that comes around with that. But we’re going to get in and get out as quick as we can and make sure we do a great job cleaning up after ourselves.”
