Chatham County residents see potential reprieve in designs for President Street rail crossing

Plans for Chatham County commuters to avoid disruptions from the train crossing at President Street near Truman Parkway took the next step this week.

At two open houses held Tuesday and Wednesday, residents who frequent the east-west corridor that connects downtown with the islands were shown three conceptual alternatives to the President Street crossing. The options offered two potential futures where the tracks would be avoided via bridge, and another short-term solution that would add a lane to President Street.

“We could get on our way without being stopped by that train,” said Michelle Riley, a Wilmington Island resident who works in Savannah, about a potential bridge. “It has been ridiculous that literally for decades they can’t schedule their train needs around specifically rush hour. As more and more people move to the islands, it’s not affecting hundreds of people, it’s affecting thousands.”
