PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) has been awarded a $900,000 grant to explore connecting major transportation hubs in the state by bus.
RIPTA wants to find ways to connect more of Rhode Island’s most-populated communities while continuing to push forward the state’s green initiatives and cutting carbon emissions.
The project would connect major transportation hubs, downtown areas, business districts, large commercial areas, and neighborhoods through light rail and bus lines.
RIPTA Interim CEO Chris Durand calls it the first step in providing faster and more reliable service.
“It represents a significant opportunity for investment into our shared future through improved transit, particularly by enhancing access in high-demand corridors for our most transit-dependent residents, thereby improving access to jobs and essential services,” he said.

One of the biggest goals of the proposed project is to get more people riding the bus, or using public transportation, than driving cars.
