Buchholz-Gainesville High game called off midway through due to rain, will resume Monday

GAINESVILLE – After a a night of games was decimated by Hurricane Helene last week , Mother Nature reared its ugly head in Gainesville once again on Friday night.

The annual city rivalry game at Citizens Field between Buchholz and Gainesville High was postponed with about 10 minutes left in the second quarter.

The game will resume Monday at 6 p.m. at Citizens with the Bobcats up on the Hurricanes 21-7 and with the ball.

The rain began to come down around 7:15 p.m., shortly before the 7:30 p.m.

For much of the first quarter, the rain was prevalent but nothing unusual for “Rainesville.”

As the first quarter ended, the rain intensified and made the already worn-out turf at Citizens Field much worse.

Referees called GHS coach Ian Scott and Buchholz coach Mark Whittemore to midfield as much of the large crowd headed for cover.

Soon, Buchholz athletic director Ron Brooks and GHS AD Phillip Knight gathered at midfield, along with a congregation of assistant coaches and Alachua County School District officials.
