Possible human bird flu case in Kern County being investigated

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Kern County Public Health announced an ongoing investigation Saturday into a person who possibly came in contact with a cow infected with bird flu.

An individual working at a dairy farm has potentially been infected with H5N1 bird flu after coming in contact with a cow carrying the virus, according to KCPH, the California Department of Public Health and the CDC.

“While the risk to the general public remains low, it continues to be extremely important for persons who may come in contact with infected animals to use caution and wear proper personal protective equipment,” stated Director of Kern County Public Health, Brynn Carrigan.

The protection of the health of Kern County residents and visitors is the number one priority of Kern County Public Health. At this time, no further details, including the location of the dairy farm where the case may have been exposed, will be released.
