PennDOT’s Operation Safe Stop hits the road

PennDOT’s Operation Safe Stop, now in its 28th year, aims to raise awareness about school bus safety and reduce bus-related traffic violations. Coinciding with National Bus Safety Week, the initiative involves law enforcement following buses in high violation areas to catch and deter drivers who illegally pass stopped buses. Despite buses being equipped with safety features, violations are common, with over 700 Pennsylvania drivers convicted annually for passing stopped buses with flashing lights. Violators face steep penalties, including fines, license suspension, and points on their driving record. School administrators are also using the week to enhance bus safety awareness in their communities.
