AKRON, Ohio — What promised to be one of the prosecution’s most explosive witnesses in the bribery trial of two former FirstEnergy executives ended up being one of the trial’s most brief.
Prosecutors hoped that Dennis Chack, a former FirstEnergy top executive and a longtime friend of ex-CEO Chuck Jones, would tell a Summit County jury about a clandestine meeting in the basement of Chack’s home, where Jones told him to lie about a $1.8 million embezzlement scheme that Chack carried out.
Instead, Chack testified for about 90 minutes, never once mentioning the scheme or that Jones told him to lie about it to the company’s internal investigators…
