Second suspect in animal hoarding case arrested in Indiana

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A second suspect in a Flint Township animal hoarding case has been arrested, police say.

The Flint Township Police Department says Kim Shires was arrested by police in Indiana on Monday while hiding out at a hotel. He has been lodged in a local jail and is awaiting extradition back to Genesee County.

He was arrested four days after Brenda Shires was arrested in Grand Rapids. Both face criminal charges from an animal seizure that happened on Feb. 17. Police found 64 animals in an unkempt home — 61 dogs and three cats. They also found the remains of 26 dogs and one cat in garbage bags set outside the home.

The house was full of piles of feces and rotting furniture. The ammonia levels in the air were deemed a health hazard and first responders were forced to work in shifts to avoid remaining inside for extended periods of time.

“This was not a temporary lapse in judgement. Conditions like this do not happen overnight. This was prolonged suffering,” the Flint Township Police Department said in a social media post. “We documented everything and removed every living animal through conditions that were physically revolting and emotionally draining, because those animals had no one else in that moment…
