2 dead after Jeep plunges into river off SR-54 in South Bay; 1 arrested

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Authorities confirmed two people died and one person was arrested after a crash on State Route 54 in the South Bay that ended with a Jeep plunging into a river.

According to California Highway Patrol, a Jeep Liberty and a Volkswagen EOS were both traveling westbound on SR-54 to southbound Interstate 5 shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday.

For reasons still under investigation, the Volkswagen crashed into the rear end of the Jeep, causing it to leave the roadway and land into the Sweetwater River below.

Emergency crews with the National City Fire Department, including a dive team and lifeguards, were called to the scene to aid in rescue and recovery operations…
