Classes at Canutillo High School in El Paso’s Upper Valley were abruptly interrupted Wednesday afternoon when the campus went into lockdown after reports of criminal activity in the surrounding neighborhood. By early afternoon, the lockdown was lifted, and school officials said all students and staff were safe while police had detained people connected to the incident.
According to KVIA, the district announced on Instagram and Facebook that the lockdown was lifted at 1:32 p.m. and that “police are investigating the off‑campus criminal activity and those involved are in custody.” The outlet reported that no additional details were released about what triggered the lockdown.
District Response and Safety Protocols
Canutillo ISD handled the situation under its Standard Response Protocol, which calls for a “LOCKDOWN! Locks, lights, out of sight” response when an immediate threat is suspected. As outlined by Canutillo ISD, the SRP is an all-hazards plan designed to give staff simple, direct commands during incidents and is practiced on a regular basis. The district also points to ongoing investments in security and a Crisis Intervention Team that supports on-campus safety.
This is not the first time neighborhood activity has spilled over into school-day precautions. KVIA previously reported that officers increased security around Canutillo High in August 2025 after off‑campus criminal activity in the area. Those earlier incidents led to upgrades that included tighter access controls and expanded monitoring around the campus.
What Families Should Know
Families were notified about Wednesday’s lockdown and its resolution through the district’s social media channels, and school officials said further updates would appear on the district website along with its official Facebook and Instagram pages. For more immediate information, the district lists its main number and campus details on its contact page.
