WWII veteran’s 100th birthday celebrated in Algiers with family, congregants and congressman

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) — There aren’t many living World War II veterans left, but one in Algiers marked a major milestone Sunday (April 12).

Robert Martin Sr. turned 100, surrounded by music, prayer and five generations of family inside St. Joseph’s Missionary Baptist Church, where church leaders said they wanted to honor their eldest member in the place that matters to him most.

“To be honored in his own church is such a glorious thing,” Pastor Hanson Broussard said. “And being a retired veteran — him being a World War II veteran — I feel privileged to be in his presence.”…
