New park in Midway honors Susie King Taylor’s legacy

MIDWAY, Ga. (WSAV) — A Liberty County woman who escaped slavery during the Civil War is being honored in a new way in Midway.

The grand opening of Susie King Taylor Freedom Park took place Monday, marking a major milestone in efforts to preserve the legacy of a historic figure born in Coastal Georgia.

Susie King Taylor went on to become a nurse with the United States Colored Troops, an educator, and an author who documented her life in her memoir “Reminiscences of My Life in Camp with the 33rd United States Colored Troop.”…
