Before doomscrolling and same-day shipping, there was a simpler thrill in life: waiting on the next issue of your favorite magazine. Think about it…
You’d hear the mail truck pull up and sprint outside, praying that today would be the day a new edition finally arrived. And, then BOOM! There it was. Glossy, untouched pages. Weird ads. Fold out posters you could hang with the others on your wall. Basically, enough chaso to shape your personality forever. It was beautiful.
We asked RockShow listeners in Lubbock what magazine they simply could NOT wait to get their hands on each month, and the answers say a whole lot about the people we used to be.
The Music Kids (aka the cool crowd)
If you fit into this crowd, you waited on the edge of your seat for these:
- Alternative Press
- Hit Parader
- Spin
- Circus Magazine
- Mojo
- Guitar World/ Guitar Player
The Skate & Counterculture Crowd
These magazines didn’t just entertain you; they raised you.
- Transword Skateboarding
- Thrasher
- CCS Skate Magazine
- Juxatpoz
The Nerds (said with love, of course)
A few of you out there were building those brains while the rest of us made bad decisions.
- Nintendo Power
- Scientific American Mind
- Zoobooks
- Wizard/ ToyFare
- GameStop Magazine
The Throwback Classic
These were basically childhood in magazine form.
- MAD Magazine
- Highlights
- Seventeen
- BOP
The “I Had Range” Crowd
Some of y’all had major taste.
- GQ
- Sports Illustrated
- Wax Poetics
- Emerge
- Rachael Ray Magazine
Whether you were waiting on skate culture, music news, comics, or just plain silly stuff, there was something special about that anticipation. It wasn’t JUST a magazine. It was totally your thing, and honestly, I kinda miss it……
