Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have officially revealed the cast for their upcoming film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The announcement came during Warner Bros.’ presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Among the fresh additions to the franchise is Jamie Dornan, known for 50 Shades of Grey, who will take on the role of Strider-also known as Aragorn. Joining him is Leo Woodall, recognized from The White Lotus Season 2, playing another Dúnedain named Halvard. This marks a new chapter, as Viggo Mortensen famously portrayed Aragorn in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Fans will also see familiar faces returning: Elijah Wood reprises his role as Frodo Baggins, Ian McKellen returns as the wizard Gandalf, and Lee Pace will be back as Thranduil, the elf king from The Hobbit. Additionally, Kate Winslet is set to join the cast as a character named Marigol.
The film is directed by Andy Serkis, who will also star as Gollum-bringing his iconic portrayal back to the screen. The Hunt for Gollum is a prequel to the original trilogy, following Aragorn and Gandalf as they embark on a quest to track down Gollum and the enigmatic ring he possesses.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled for a theatrical release in December 2027. Meanwhile, fans can also look forward to another new Lord of the Rings project currently in development, co-written by Stephen Colbert, the Late Show host and longtime Tolkien enthusiast.
