Calixto Mexican Grill Plots Grandmont-Rosedale Takeover

Calixto Mexican Grill, the Livonia-born taquería that has already built a loyal following in the suburbs, is gearing up to plant its flag in Detroit. The restaurant is set to open a second, full-service location in the Grandmont-Rosedale neighborhood as the lead dining spot at the new Minock Park Place development. Owner Enrique Aquino says the Detroit outpost will feature a bigger kitchen and a satellite-kitchen setup for up-and-coming chefs, to make the place both a neighborhood hangout and a launchpad for small food businesses. The move is aimed squarely at filling the gap for family-friendly, sit-down dining along the Grand River corridor, where choices are limited.

According to What Now Detroit, Aquino is targeting an opening that lines up closely with Minock Park Place’s debut, likely around late July or August. The outlet notes that Calixto’s first location opened in 2024 at 29102 5 Mile Road in Livonia and that the new Detroit spot will sit roughly a 12-minute drive away. Aquino said crowd-pleasers like fajitas, quesabirrias and tamale plates are set to make the jump to the new dining room.

Minock Park Place at a glance

Minock Park Place is a roughly $20 million mixed-use project slated for the corner of Grand River Avenue and Minock Street, replacing a long-vacant parcel that has sat idle for years. The development will bring 42 affordable senior apartments and about 5,400 square feet of combined retail and restaurant space to the corridor, according to the Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation. It is pitched as a way to give older residents more housing options while beefing up the neighborhood’s main commercial strip.

WXYZ reports that more than half of the building’s commercial square footage is earmarked for Calixto, a sizable bet that local leaders say should help keep dining dollars in the neighborhood instead of sending residents elsewhere. Mike Randall, executive director of GRDC, told the station that “Grand River is kind of like the downtown of Grandmont Rosedale” and said the project is meant to create the kind of family-friendly spot that residents currently have to leave the area to find. WXYZ also notes that the senior apartments are expected to open this summer, while the full commercial build-out could run into late 2026 or early 2027.

What this means for the neighborhood

GRDC plans to subsidize commercial leases and deliver white-boxed spaces to reduce build-out costs for incoming tenants, a model the group has already used on other Grand River corridor projects. Per the Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation, retail bays can be configured for small restaurants and shops, and the hope is that operators like Aquino will help spark more private investment along the stretch…
