One hospitalized following officer-involved shooting in East Village

SAN DIEGO — An investigation into a shooting involving San Diego Police is underway in East Village on Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting happened shortly after 5 p.m. at the intersection of Island Avenue and 16th Street. Witnesses told CBS 8 they saw a woman wielding either a knife or something resembling an ice pick, threatening another person on the sidewalk at the corner of that intersection. They say an officer, who was on patrol in East Village, approached the woman and ordered her to drop the weapon she was holding.

Witnesses said she refused and instead began to approach the officer with the knife. They say it was then that the officer fired several shots. One witness told CBS 8 they heard five or six shots ring out. Jessica Alcantara, one of the witnesses, said they saw the woman conscious and alert when the ambulance arrived…
