East Baton Rouge School leaders warn of major impacts as St. George School District vote nears

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — With a vote on the proposed Village of St. George School District quickly approaching, East Baton Rouge Parish school leaders are warning that the plan could have significant consequences for students and resources.

“If you want what’s best for students, this is not the time,” said Shashonnie Steward, EBR School Board District 4 member, urging voters to weigh the decision carefully.

School board members say the proposed breakaway could impact funding, staffing, and student services across the parish. District estimates show the East Baton Rouge Parish School System could lose $17.6 million in state Minimum Foundation Program funding, in addition to a projected $100 million decrease in property and sales tax revenue…
