Fairview firefighters put out fire in garbage truck started by lithium battery pack

FAIRVIEW, N.C. (WLOS) — A garbage truck crew in Fairview noticed something alarming on April 16 – smoke.

The operator of the truck called 911 because he noticed that the smoke was coming from the garbage truck’s load bay as he was compacting the trash, according to Fairview Volunteer Fire Department Chief Scott Jones.

Turns out, it was a fire inside the truck’s garbage bay, and it was caused by something someone discarded into their trash – a lithium-ion battery pack, according to Jones…
