3 small earthquakes hit NC Triad within 12 hours; 5 in Randolph County this month

ASHEBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — Three small earthquakes were recorded in North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad in Randolph County over less than 16 hours — all three within a couple of miles where a pair rattled south of Greensboro earlier this month, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The three earthquakes are the latest since two struck in Randolph County on April 5. There have now been four quakes in a small area between Randleman and Archdale in less than 12 days.

This week’s first quake struck just northwest of Asheboro just before 3:45 p.m. Thursday. It registered a magnitude of 1.9 and occurred at a depth of about 1 kilometer.
