Thick fog cripples Friday school schedules in Michigan

For thousands of Michigan families, the Friday morning routine took an unexpected turn. Dense fog blanketed much of the state on April 17, 2026, reducing visibility to a quarter of a mile or less in many areas and compounding an already difficult situation for a region still grappling with persistent flooding. From Saginaw County to Monroe County and across much of West Michigan, the hazardous conditions forced three school institutions to cancel the day entirely and pushed dozens more to delay their start times by two hours.

Three schools shut down for the day

The outright closures affected families in two separate parts of the state. 1. St. Charles Community Schools in Saginaw County called off the full school day, with officials pointing to flooded roads and heavy fog as the driving factors. Childcare services at the district remained available for families in need. In Monroe County, two additional institutions also went dark: 2. Monroe County Middle College and 3. Monroe County Intermediate School District, both of which had been scheduled to hold a half day of classes today before the weather intervened.

Monroe County Emergency Management had alerted residents to the advisory via phone and email alerts as early as 2:50 a.m., with the dense fog advisory in that county set to expire by 10 a.m. The National Weather Service extended the alert through 11 a.m. in other affected parts of the state.

Schools operating on two-hour delays

In Saginaw County, Chesaning Union Schools, Hemlock Schools, Merrill Schools, St. John Lutheran School in Hemlock, St. Peter Lutheran School and Swan Valley Schools all pushed their start times back by two hours.

Monroe County saw one of the most extensive lists of delays in the state. Schools opening late today included Airport Community Schools, Bedford Public Schools, Dundee Community Schools, Holy Ghost Lutheran School, Horizon Science Academy New Bedford, Ida Public Schools, Jefferson School District, Mason Consolidated Schools, Monroe Public Schools, Monroe parochial schools, St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Academy, St. Joseph School in Erie, St. Mary Catholic Central High School, Summerfield Schools, Trinity Lutheran School, Whiteford Agricultural Schools and Zion Lutheran School…
