Kratom law named after Chattanooga man now headed to governor’s desk

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A bill named after a Chattanooga man who died after using kratom is heading to Governor Bill Lee’s desk.

Lawmakers in the Tennessee House passed “Matthew Davenport’s Law” Tuesday, a measure that would ban the use, sale and distribution of kratom across the state.

The bill is named for Matthew Davenport, who died at age 27 in 2024 after what lawmakers describe as a lethal interaction between kratom and prescribed medications.
