A million bees removed from area near downtown after truck hauling bees crashes: TDOT

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The area of I-40 East near downtown Knoxville is officially clear after approximately one million bees were released when the truck that was hauling them crashed.

Tennessee Department of Transportation Mark Nagi put out a warning that the ramp from I-40 to Henley Street was closed just after 11:15 a.m. Friday because of the crash. At the time, he said the bees were swarming the area.

Just after 12:45 p.m., Nagi announced that all of the bees had been removed from the area.

Earlier in the morning, around 11:30 a.m., Nagi shared that the ramp had reopened, however, the bees were still “buzzing” around. Knoxville Police asked drivers to seek alternate routes while crews are working to clear the scene of the crash.

“Unless you are dressed in this outfit please stay in your vehicles in this area,” Nagi said, referring to a photo of an individual wearing beekeeping protective wear…
