Mid-Michigan apple farmers prepare for upcoming cold snap

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Cold weather is on the way this weekend, and that could spell doom for this year’s apple crop, which is already starting to bloom.

Retired Michigan State University Professor of Horticulture Jim Flore says apple buds on his farm have not quite opened up yet. That will keep them protected when temperatures dip below freezing.

“As that develops more, then it becomes more and more vulnerable to frost,” he said.

Flore maintains about a thousand apple trees on his farm in Williamston Township. He says even if the cold gets to some of the buds, others are likely to survive intact…
