New foundation honors Tulsa detective’s legacy of compassion for crime victims

TULSA, Okla. – A new memorial foundation is honoring the life and legacy of a Tulsa police detective who spent decades standing beside crime victims in their darkest moments.

Detective John Brown died from colon cancer last summer after more than 30 years with the Tulsa Police Department, including 13 years in the homicide unit. His family and friends say he was a helper at heart — a larger-than-life presence who never stopped caring about others.

Some may recognize Brown from the television show The First 48, and his family says the man viewers saw on screen was exactly who he was off camera…
