Woman tells police she set fire to a home in Oakland City

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. (WEHT) — A woman is behind bars after police say she admitted to setting a home in Oakland City on fire.

Oakland City Police Chief Tim Gaines says dispatch got a call about a fire at 3:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. Crews were then called to a house on East Columbia Street.

When crews arrived, they say they found a woman standing around the fire. Chief Gaines says this woman told authorities she was the one who started the fire. The suspect was later identified as 46-year-old Julie Renee Benton.

Benton told police she started the fire with a lighter. Officials have not said if anything else was used to start the fire…
