Family’s beloved hunting home spared during Mobile County wildfire

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — We’re learning more about how quick action from first responders and neighbors helped save property during a large wildfire near Citronelle one week ago.

Around a hunting camp in north Mobile County, fire still smolders several days later, but there are tiny miracles. Fire breaks saved a tractor. A tree planted from an acorn more than a decade ago still stands, though fire surrounded it. A camp-home came within a few feet of joining the flames that were at its back doorstep.

“It was one of the most helpless feelings I’ve ever felt,” property owner Chris Hood said.

Hood said he started getting alerts Sunday morning, on April 12th, from an outdoor camera on the property as he was out of town. Images showed flames inching closer to the hunting camp home, but as the fire neared, help was already there…
