Austin police warn of high-tech auto thefts using diagnostic tools to steal vehicles

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police are warning drivers about a growing auto theft trend involving criminals using advanced technology to break into and steal vehicles.

During a recent Downtown Austin Alliance safety forum, officers shared concerns about thieves using onboard diagnostic, or OBD, tools — devices typically used by mechanics to service cars — to gain access to vehicle computer systems.
