Clifton Park batting cages dedicated in memory of Shen student killed in crash

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. (NEWS10) — New batting cages are coming to Clifton Park thanks in-part to a $100,000 grant from New York State. The venue is in memory of a Shenendehowa High School student who was killed by a drunk driver in 2012.

The Deanna Marie Rivers Batting Cages will be located at the Miss Shen Softball Field at the Clifton Common in Clifton Park. Deanna was a high school softball player when she, along with fellow Shen student-athlete Christopher Stewart, were killed in a Northway crash.

The facility was officially dedicated on Saturday. New York State Sen. Jim Tedisco, the Rivers family, Clifton Park Town Supervisor Phil Barrett, former councilman Anthony Morelli, and current Miss Shen softball players were on hand to cut the ribbon.

“Deanna Rivers was truly a bright light for her family, friends and our entire community who with Christopher Stewart tragically lost their lives in 2012,” Tedisco said. “I’ve gotten to know the Rivers family over the years and seen first-hand their continued dedication to keeping Deanna’s memory alive, her love and enthusiasm for softball, and ensure what happened to their family never happens to another family.”
