Injured hiker rescued by Med-Flight 1 on Old Rag Mountain

MADISON COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – A Sunday stroll turned hazardous as a hiker suffered a head injury and was saved by a rescue helicopter, Virginia State Police (VSP) say.

At 12:15 p.m. on April 19, Med-Flight-1 rescued an injured hiker on Old Rag Mountain in Madison County who VSP says sustained a head injury.

Med-Flight 1, a medical evacuation helicopter operated by VSP, is based at the Chesterfield County Airport. Crews received an initial call at 11:10 a.m. and got ready to fly. VSP says the helicopter flew approximately 80 nautical miles to the rescue site.

VSP says an initial hoist rescue was unsuccessful because of wind conditions. The hiker was rescued on the helicopter crew’s second attempt as they took a different path.

A Chesterfield County Fire and EMS Flight paramedic was lowered to the ground to secure the hiker. The rescue team flew the injured hiker to UVA Medical Center, according to VSP…
