Band of Oz musician Howard Winstead Jr. killed in I-95 crash

Howard Douglas Winstead Jr., a longtime member of the Band of Oz and a fixture in North Carolina’s beach music scene, died April 11 in a crash on Interstate 95 in Harnett County. He was 67.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Winstead was driving a 2019 Chrysler Pacifica northbound around 2:15 a.m. near Pope Road when his vehicle struck the rear of a tanker truck that had slowed for traffic. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck was not injured. The crash remains under investigation, and the highway reopened shortly before 6 a.m…
