Texas Man Dies After Fall on Zion National Parks Angels Landing Trail

Additional Coverage:

A 68-year-old man from Laredo, Texas, has tragically died after falling from Angels Landing, one of Zion National Park’s most renowned and demanding trails. The National Park Service identified the deceased as Gilberto Ramos on Monday.

The fatal incident occurred on Friday, April 17, around 2 p.m. local time. Authorities received reports that a hiker had fallen from the trail’s infamous chained section-a narrow, steep ridge known for its dramatic drop-offs and heavy foot traffic.

Rangers and local law enforcement quickly responded and located Ramos on the north side of Angels Landing near Big Bend in Zion Canyon. Recovery efforts concluded that evening, with his remains transferred to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner.

Following the accident, officials temporarily closed the West Rim Trail, including Scout Lookout and Angels Landing, to allow for emergency response and recovery operations. The National Park Service and Washington County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fall.

Angels Landing is scheduled to remain closed from April 20 through April 23 for trail maintenance. During this period, no hiking permits will be issued.

The day-before lottery for permits will reopen on April 23 for hikes planned on April 24 and beyond. While Angels Landing itself is closed, the broader West Rim Trail remains accessible to visitors.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the inherent risks associated with hiking in rugged terrain, especially on trails as challenging as Angels Landing. Park officials urge hikers to exercise caution and be prepared when exploring such areas.
