Layoff notices going out to Canby School District employees

The continuing saga of budget issues within school districts across the state hit home the week of April 20 when 53 staff members at the Canby School District were informed they wouldn’t have a job for the 2026-27 school year.

The staffers received layoff notifications April 22-23 for the 2026-27 school year, as part of reductions the school district is being forced to make to try to make budgetary ends meet.

In a letter to the community last week, CSD Superintendent Jennifer Patterson explained what is happening and why, namely a $6.3 million shortfall in the district budget, which not only forced the implementation of four new furlough days over the final few months of this school year, but the impending layoff of 53 employees within the district…
