New designs to be considered for Carolina Bays Parkway Extension in North Carolina

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is considering new design options for the Carolina Bays Parkway Extension project following public feedback.

The Carolina Bays Parkway Extension is a joint effort by the NCDOT and the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) to extend the parkway from S.C. 9 in Horry County to U.S. 17 in Brunswick County. It involves creating a multi-lane highway that combines existing road segments with new construction.

NCDOT announced that, after evaluating public feedback from hearings in October 2025 and accounting for funding issues, they have chosen not to proceed with the North Carolina segment of Alternative 4, which includes:

  • Building on a new location and tying in near the intersection of U.S. 17 and N.C. 904
  • Upgrading a portion of U.S. 17 to a fully controlled freeway from N.C. 904 to N.C. 130 in Shallotte
